The Frequently-Asked Questions page has an answer for you.

Known Bugs in version 1.6

bulletError during startup, may mention running BadgeManager:  we're not sure why but sometimes TroopManager and BadgeManager fail to "introduce" themselves to one another in your TROOP.MDB database file.  If this happens, contact technical support.

bulletScout Details Report, Date Range:  Known potential bug, we think we've fixed it but due to the astronomical combination of report configurations versus scout history data we can't be certain.  If you encounter a bug, please report it.  Work-around is to avoid using a date range if you get an error when attempting to use a date range.

bulletBackup to diskette:  when your TROOP.MDB database file is larger than what a diskette can hold, the backup routine will fail.  Work-around is to use the Purge Old Data feature and delete old meeting attendance and/or financial transactions.

bulletDon't have a diskette drive:  You can make a backup copy yourself using the Windows Explorer to send it to a recordable cd-rom or Zip drive or similar.  You can use WinZip (see http://www.WinZip.com) to compress TROOP.MDB to be small enough to fit on a diskette.

Many troop leaders use e-mail to send a copy from home to their e-mail account at work, or to a spouse or co-leader or friend.

Missing MSAIN200.DLL and Missing UTILITY.MDA

This one we can't fix on our end because it's Microsoft's bug! It occurs when you install Microsoft Access 2000 or XP and don't check the box that keeps existing copies of Access. TroopManager Plus is based on the Microsoft Access development tool, version 2.0. The Access installation routine incorrectly deletes key runtime files upon which we depend. The fix is to either re-install TroopManager Plus, or download the missing files and copy them into the directory where you installed TroopManager Plus, probably C:\TroopMgr.

The exact text of the messages read:

Cannot find MSAIN200.DLL. Windows needs this file to run C:\TroopMgr\TroopMgr.exe.

Couldn't find file 'Utility.mda'.

Here are the missing files. Download and copy to the directory where you installed TroopManager.

        MSAIN200.DLL (403 Kb)
        UTILITY.MDA (224 Kb)

Note!  Recent changes to Internet Explorer security have apparently made the Utility.mda file difficult or impossible to download.  Customers are reporting that the file does not appear to exist, yet the file is absolutely, positively present on our server. If you need this file and cannot download it, please send us an e-mail message.  Re-installing the product is probably the best route.  This is safe because the installer does not alter your troop database file.

Why are there bugs?

As much as we'd love to eradicate every single bug in each of our products, we can't afford to! This might sound like an excuse (well, it is) or it might not even make sense. Allow us to explain: Our products try to strike a balance between the most features and functionality for the lowest cost to you. While you would be very happy if the price were only US $5, you would not get many features for that amount. You would be very pleased with 1,000 features, but would not want to pay US $500. Somewhere between those extremes lies the right number of features for the right price. We think we have achieved that with TroopManager Plus at US $30.

Getting rid of bugs means time invested in quality assurance testing. This is a cost that must be recouped. Once again we need to strike a balance between cheap but bug-filled software and expensive but perfect software. We hope we struck the balance properly for TroopManager Plus. Many, many hours were invested in testing that all features work correctly and reliably. Many beta testers volunteered their time to work with the product and report errors.

Despite this investment, TroopManager Plus is far too complex to test so thoroughly that we can honestly say there are no bugs. Rather than investing even more time (and thus drive the cost up), we released the product when we were confident that the vast majority of features work reliably. We know better than to think that we will EVER find and fix all the bugs.
